What is transferrable points?

These are credit cards that allow you to transfer from their currency (ex: American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, or Citi Thank You Rewards) to other airlines and hotels

What are redeemable points?

These can include cards that have transferrable points, such as American Express, Chase, and Citi, but also include cards that allow you to accrue “miles” so that you can redeem for statement credits. These cards include Barclaycard Arrival Plus or CapitalOne Venture.

Rights when on an overbooked flight

  • Anyone involuntarily bumped must be compensated, per Department of Transportation regulations.
  • If the new flight gets you to your destination within one to two hours of the originally scheduled arrival, the airline must pay 200% of the price of the one-way fare, up to a maximum of $675. If you’re delayed to the final destination by more than two hours within the U.S. (or four hours on international flights), the airline must fork over 400% of the one-way fare, maxing out at $1,350.
  • Make sure to always know your rights
  • Once you cash the check (or accept the free flight), you will probably lose the ability to pursue more money from the airline later on
  • Negotiate higher settlements with the airline’s complaint department
